How do I know if I need counseling?

If you’ve found your way to this page, chances are you’re looking for support—and that’s a meaningful first step. People seek counseling for many reasons. Here are some signs that it might be the right time for you:

  • You feel stuck or unfulfilled in your relationships.

  • You’ve noticed unhealthy family patterns and want to break the cycle.

  • You're navigating a major life transition and feeling overwhelmed.

  • Stress is showing up in ways that leave you disconnected from others or frustrated with yourself.

  • You carry fear or shame about something in your past and sense that it’s still impacting you.

  • You need a nonjudgmental space where you can say the things you haven’t been able to say elsewhere.

  • You’re struggling to complete daily tasks or maintain your usual routines.

  • You feel mentally stuck or fixated on a specific issue that won’t go away.

What will happen in my first session?

Your first session will last 60 minutes and will look a little different from the rest of our meetings.  In a first session we will go over paperwork. This first session will look a little different than continuing sessions.  In a first session we will go over logistical things such as paperwork, billing etc.  We will also define your goals for counseling and explore factors that may be contributing to current symptoms.

Is therapy confidential?

Generally, yes.  What we talk about stays between us.  However, there are a few legal exceptions to confidentiality.  They include:

  • If the client intends to harm themself

  • If the client intends to seriously harm someone else

  • Suspected abuse of a vulnerable population such as a child (under 18), someone with a disability, an elderly person or prenatal abuse

If you have any questions about confidentiality, please ask.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes!  We can do sessions in person or online.  I use a HIPPA compliant telehealth platform called doxy.me.  It is easy to use and I can walk you through any questions you might have about it.  All I ask is that you find a place to do your sessions that offers privacy and minimal distractions so you can get the most of out the session.

Where are you located?

I am part of the Wellspring Group.  Our office is east of Silver Lake Road in New Brighton, just north of 694.  The address is 1403 Silver Lake Rd. Suite 2, New Brighton, MN 55112.

Does it really matter if I see a licensed counselor?

While licensure does not always equal competency it is important to see a licensed counselor.  A licensed counselor is held to the higher standards governed by the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy, has had education and training specifically in counseling and psychology, and has successfully completed rigorous exams.  Seeing a licensed counselor also provides some protection for you, the consumer, as you have the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy to which you can file a complaint if you see a reason to do so.

How do I know which counselor is right for me?

There are a couple of things to look for as you seek out a counselor who will be a good fit for you.  I recommend looking at the issues they treat and their approach to counseling (which you can often find on their website).  Additionally, don't be afraid to interview counselors until you find one that feels like a good fit.  Many counselors offer free consultations for this reason.  The counseling process is built on trust, and it is important that you find someone you connect with and who has the tools to help your reach your goals.

Is counseling worth it?

It can be hard sometimes to invest in ourselves when there are so many things clamoring for our money and energy.  But if you can live a more meaningful life, have richer relationships, and experience greater wholeness it will benefit not only you but also your family, your friends, and your areas of influence.
